A Multi-Layered Defense Strategy
LinkedIn’s approach to cleaning up its feed goes beyond a single button. According to Hari Srinivasan, LinkedIn’s Chief Product Officer, the company is implementing a comprehensive strategy to protect the integrity of professional connections. This includes:
- Advanced Classifiers: Developing new AI models specifically designed to detect and demote low-quality content in user recommendations.
- Automation Defenses: LinkedIn is currently blocking hundreds of thousands of automated comment attempts every single day, with millions of other automation attempts thwarted in recent months.
- User Dashboards: The platform will begin privately flagging accounts that post content perceived as inauthentic due to excessive AI usage, encouraging users to maintain their unique voice.
- Feature Refinement: In a strategic pivot, LinkedIn is replacing its « enhance your post » feature—which used to rewrite user content—with a tool focused purely on proofreading to avoid altering a user’s original voice.
The Broader Industry Context
LinkedIn is not alone in this fight. The entire digital ecosystem is struggling to manage the explosion of bot and AI-generated traffic. Cloudflare has noted that bot traffic on the web has surpassed human-generated requests, a milestone reached much faster than anticipated. Other platforms are also taking action: Substack has introduced tools to identify AI-written newsletters, and even startups like Digg have faced significant challenges due to bot flooding.
