Starting in mid-September, users will notice special badges on certain artist profiles. These labels serve as a clear signal that the artist’s identity—including their name and imagery—is entirely synthetic rather than a representation of a real human being. This initiative aims to provide transparency to listeners who may find it difficult to distinguish between a living musician and a photorealistic AI creation.

Algorithmic Boundaries: Protecting the Human Experience

One of the most significant aspects of this policy change is how these AI entities will interact with Spotify’s discovery engines. To ensure that the platform remains a space for human connection and career-building, the company has decided to implement strict limitations on AI-generated content:

Algorithmic Exclusion: AI Personas will not be included in editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default.
Personalized Discovery: Their music will not appear in personalized recommendations unless a user explicitly follows the AI artist.
Identity vs. Creation: The labeling process focuses on the identity of the artist. It is a distinction of the profile’s persona, not necessarily a judgment on the musicality of the tracks themselves.

By making ‘following’ an artist an explicit choice, Spotify is putting the power back into the hands of the listener, ensuring that AI content only enters a user’s ecosystem through direct intent.
