How the New AI Verification Feature Works
Shoppers who receive a suspicious email, text, or notification claiming to be from Amazon can now turn to Alexa for Shopping and ask directly whether the communication is authentic. The system cross-references the incoming message against the vast volume of legitimate correspondence Amazon sends globally, examining sender details, message content, timing, and metadata to reach a verdict.
Amazon says the AI can conclusively confirm whether a message actually originated from its own infrastructure. The company also notes that the system will become more accurate over time as users report additional suspicious communications, feeding a continuous improvement loop into the detection model.
The Scale of the Scam Problem
Each year, roughly 360,000 customers contact Amazon’s support team to question whether a message they received is legitimate. The types of scams flagged by the company range from fake order confirmations and bogus Prime renewal alerts to fraudulent account suspension warnings, deceptive package delivery notices, and even counterfeit job offers.
Earlier this year, Amazon introduced a dedicated email address — verify@amazon.com — where anyone can forward suspicious messages and receive a confirmation of authenticity. An online form on the company’s customer service portal offers the same functionality, giving shoppers multiple avenues to double-check questionable communications.
Part of a Broader Alexa Overhaul
The scam-detection capability marks the latest addition to a deliberate shift in how Amazon has repositioned Alexa around shopping-centric use cases. Rather than functioning as a general-purpose voice assistant, the updated Alexa for Shopping now helps users find personalized deals, build shopping lists, reorder everyday essentials, receive AI-generated product summaries, and even transcribe handwritten lists.
Just a day before the scam-detection announcement, Amazon also added a feature that lets customers set alerts for events they care about — such as a favorite brand releasing a new product, a beloved author publishing a book, or a musician dropping a new album. These additions reflect a clear strategy: make Alexa indispensable for everyday shopping decisions and keep users inside the Amazon ecosystem.
Availability
The scam-checking feature is accessible through both the Amazon website and the mobile app, meaning shoppers can verify a suspicious message whether they are browsing on a desktop or checking their phone on the go. As AI-driven phishing schemes grow more sophisticated, tools like this could become an essential layer of defense for everyday consumers.
